SKC Engineering is now a CWB accredited welder test center
To help the local welding community during these difficult times we are now a CWB accredited test center. Limited spots are available for welders who would normally use the local colleges that are closed due to Covid-19.
Effect of the spot welding simulation strategy on analysis of performance in automotive parts
Last year, together with our sister company IDIADA, we presented at the 72nd Annual Assembly & International Conference in Bratislava Slovakia. Our presentation dealt with the simulation of spot welds to determine material properties after welding. Our approach used our signature techniques for welding simulation combined with the results of thermo-mechanical materials tests. The results of these simulations were then used by IDIADA to improve their crash test models
Last November our paper from the conference was translated into Polish and published in ‘Projektowanie i Konstrukcje Inzynierskie’ magazine. Our article was was chosen by internet voters as the best (‘most wanted’) article from this issue of the magazine.
Congratulation to Mahyar and his team for this achievement.

Weld sequence optimization with ABAQUS welding interface
Mahyar Asadi will present on the following at the SIMULIA technology day in Toronto OCT 18, 2017
Welding engineering is among one of the complex fields that has historically relied on the past experience of welding engineers. In the modern age, high power computing platforms for simulation and weld modeling enables welding engineers to explore complex welding and weld design parameters when presented with different scenarios on how to proceed with a given welding problem. The main theme of this talk presents industrial projects where these services helped clients to define an optimal design envelope with a clear understanding of the correlation between large numbers of design parameters. An example will be presented for an interactive welding design of a large structure for optimal fixture, tack weld, strong back, and sequence design where extremely tight dimensional tolerances were required. Another example shows how the capability of modeling and simulation helped weld engineers for critical assessment of a series of cracked welds. A third example will be on the assessment of retrofit options, for a welded structure containing cracks that developed after initial welding. These cases will present how weld engineers can be enabled to develop creative options when developing a solution to welding problems using computational welding models.
Creep Modelling
Mahyar Assadi will present his work on simulation & engineering to investigate & predict the failure of four commonly used flat head designs in heat recovery steam generators.
The work encompasses a number of custom algorithms which work with the Abaqus simulation suite, to accurately capture the physics of this damage mode.

York Theater retrofit provides a challenge for our structural department
SKC Engineering is currently engaged with a challenging project at the York Theatre in Vancouver BC, This is a restoration project to a building that is approximately one hundred years old. We are detailing the steelwork for the fabricators and erection crew.
The original building is a mixture of timber-frame and brick, making each column and beam unique. Our drafting department has modelled the building envelope and the new steel work frame inside.
Underwater Welding
New Carbon to Stainless Steel Procedure
SKC Engineering has qualified its first underwater welding procedure! We have had an interesting challenge recently, writing a weld procedure, test the procedure and testing two additional welders for an underwater refit in Northern BC.
The governing code was AWS D3.6, catagory B. The materials to be welded were Stainless Steel to Carbon Steel. We had the assitance of Can Pac Divers in North Vancouver. The lab work to test the coupons was done in our own lab in Port Kells, BC.
We are looking for forward to doing more underwater welding qualifications in the future.
